With this third instalment (the sixty-first volume of the naïve label's complete Vivaldi Edition) he now has twenty cello concertos under his belt. Christophe Coin has be-come a noted authority in the work of the brilliant, tirelessly prolific Venetian composer, performing it with a host of different ensembles, such as L'Onda Armonica, the ensemble founded by Sergio Azzolini. As with the first two volumes he alternates between the cello and the violoncello piccolo, an instrument of which he is immensely fond. He performs on a four-string model, standing up while playing, to allow its resonances full play. This choice of two instruments provides a palette of highly varied sound colours, enriched in the continuo part by an assortment of contrasting combinations of organ, harpsichord, the-orbo, and occasionally the mandolin (see Concerto RV 400). As Vivaldi expert Cesare Fertonani explains: 'Vivaldi, living up to his flamboyant nickname of the Red Priest, showcases the entire, wide range of the cello, covering all the registers of the human voice, from the lowest to the very highest notes, while highlighting its characteristic cantabile style. He handles the cello as a bass instrument – but one with a completely unexpected added ability to reach well up into the tenor range.' Imaginatively elaborate in both their solo and orchestral parts, Vivaldi's cello concertos are here ablaze with incandescent energy – proving themselves more than a match for their counterparts for the violin.
