The Oval, winner of the “IStructE Award” for arts, leisure and entertainment and sport structures, 2006, is a book not only for architects, designers, engineers, professors and universities students yet fans of Olympic Games and sports in general.

This monograph is entirely dedicated to the speed skating Arena at Lingotto in Turin, The Oval. Along with the Hockey 1 Palasport, a 100 million euro venture by Arata Isozaki and Pier Paolo Maggiora, and refurbishment to Franco Levi’s original 1961 Palavela, the Oval stands as one of the “chefs-d’oeuvre” of the Turin Winter Olympics. It was designed by Alessandro and Pino Zoppini practice specialized in sports and recreational architecture. Theirs, among other things, is the Stadium for the National Guard at Riyad in Saudi Arabia, and the Olympic Swimming Centre at Milan’s Parco Lambro, in which they joined forces with HOK (Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum), one of the largest and most important architecture and engineering firms on the international scene, with bases in the USA, Canada, Europe and Mexico. In eleven months, from August 2002 to June 2003, the executive design was drawn up and permits obtained; in the following eighteen months the building was erected, and by that December it was ready for a first try-out of the track when it hosted the last contest in the world cup.
